MSD Ignition and Disti Cap Questions (archive)

OK -- so I did some poking around and found an MSD ignition box nestled under the coolant expansion tank, and trying to figure out what the hell the previous owner was trying to do. Is there a factory CD ignition box, like on Porsches, or is this just an aftermarket "improvement" that I have been blessed with?

Also, I was trying to remove the plastic shroud around the distributor cap, and I cannot get even my smallest 1/4-inch drive sockets to seat on the little bolt heads. It appears that there is not enough clearance to get a wrench or scoket around the bolt heads with enoguh grip not to twist the bolt heads. Any suggestions?
