Answer to #1

I paid just over $4.00 each for my OEM (Contitech)belts. I dunno what a set from Kragen will cost you, but I can't see any problem with using an aftermarket set so long as you can get the correct sizes (and from a reputable manufacturer).

These are the OEM belts - sizes are printed on the labels.

Answer to question #2

I just did my belts last Monday. I haven't written anything up, but could throw a little something together if anyone is interested. The procedure is pretty straight forward. The only thing to remember is that the A/C compressor has two hard to see/reach adjustment bolts on top of the unit (don't recall if they're 13mm or 15mm off hand). These are best reached from underneath with the car on a lift or jackstands.
I had great luck using a stubby 3/8" ratchet in the limited space.

Other than that, be careful with the 19mm idler nuts/adjusting bars (toothed nuts/bars) and p/s pump and alternator. They're fragile and don't respond well to gorilla force. Mine were chewed up so badly that I had to replace them. Ideally, you will just hold these in place with a 19mm wrench while loosening or tightening the 13mm nut on the opposite end of the bolt - using only minimal torque on the idler nut to tighten the belts before cranking down the 13mm nut for good.

So that's the quick and dirty. I'll have the step by step hopefully by tomorrow evening.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me.

Take care.

Two questions:

1. Is there any advantage to buying OEM over going to Kragen and picking up belts for an E30? I suppose OEM parts have a 12 month warranty correct? They're probably also 2x as expensive.

2. Does anyone have belt replacement procedure pictures online? I know that's kind of a silly question since it's relatively easy, but Dinan cut off my A/C belt so I could pass tech before I ever saw it. Since I'm new to the E30, it's tricky to replace something that isn't there. :)

Thanks,

Brian
