if you measure the length of the outside plates of an old one and a new one they're the same, they wear on the contact points inside and get longer that way. Think about it, if they stretched they would probably do so right away.

just my $.02 I had this argument with people for years when I worked in bike shops and time and time again had to break out the ruler.
