This is an excellent price if it is the real deal. The parts alone amount to about 750 normally.

i have always thought that mine was loosing power i think it was, it seems to be able to pin me back in the seat now when i give it some throttle.
The chain being slack was effecting the timing also idle was rough and lumpy as well as revs around 1500-2000 rpm if the throttle was held open

with regard to the price 997 my labour cost was only around 225 the rest was the parts
The last time the guy did the job on another car 8 months ago one of the guides (one at the bottom Banana shaped)was only 88 it was now over 220

if you tackle it yourself good luck!!! i did not have the time or mechanical knowhow. i can work on electrics but not engines

May do it myself although it is a fair wedge, my car is a bit noisy on startup, but seems worse once warmed up...although all M3's seem to sound quite 'thrashy'...My main problem is serious lack of torque at low revs...to the point where driving with A/C on in town conditions is really bad!!! Tried lots of things but the main thing I'm told is that it's more than likely a stretched chain....

I had the tentioner replaced just after getting the car last year cos it was noisy sounded like a diesel engine having a bad day.

this seemed to help however i am now using the car every day (sold my 520i)and recently the noise was getting worse again so i went back to the dealer who fitted the tentioner they told me that if the new part did not cure the fault replace the chain. They wanted over 1300 and seemed a bit reluctant to tackle the job i got the usual "They all do it" However if they all do it why does it not make the noise all the time
turns out that the tentioner was ok but the chain and guides were that weak that the tentioner could not take up the slack chain. I have been lucky.

If your car makes the noise at startup do not drive it until the noise goes away let it idle (this is what i have been doing). I think the chain has more chance of jumping when the noise is there

Cool thanks for that!! How did you know your chain was about to go?? Was it really noisy or something? Does your car now 'go' better generally? That price is not bad really....

Had new chain fitted last week by Autobahn in Hexham Northeast england total cost was 997.00. The car runs a lot smoother and seems to be more economical (28-32M/G this weekend) but who cares about ecomomy my point is the timing was out and the chain was so weak it was on the point of snapping i had the job done just in time. There is no more annoying rattle at startup.

Giles you said you were needing this job doing, it is worth every penny. All parts replaced including sprockets.
