this is hard to determine i have a friend that has an 88M3 with 340,000 miles and never had the timing chain done , and i also know of a car with 120,000 mile that lunched the chain at a track event . i think alot depends on the maintanence on the car (both of the above people were religous about maintenance ) . if you get a lot of rattle at startup i think i would be inclined to change the chain and tensioner as a precaution ,if you plan on spending a lot of time at redline change it every 100,000 and a matter of routine miantenance!
how do i determine if the Timing chain system is due for replacement. I bought the car with a full service history and the sprockets looks good, is there a tell tale sign or a way to measure this, Thanks ?
