I have just had mine replaced 76k miles (very noisy at startup hot or cold engine sounded like a truck), the hydrolic tensioner was replaced 3k miles ago and the noise was still there at startup. I was advised by BMW dealer and independant company that if replacing this part did not cure the noise replace the chain. hope this helps

how do i determine if the Timing chain system is due for replacement. I bought the car with a full service history and the sprockets looks good, is there a tell tale sign or a way to measure this, Thanks ?
