Help!! Bilstien sport strut install (archive)

Anyone know if you need to replace the oil in the strut housing before installing Bilstien sport struts? Chilton shop manual says not to put oil if the rod diameter is greater than 1.3" which is the case with the sport shocks. However this does not seem right. Don't you need the oil to transfer heat from the strut insert to the housing?
