Why deviate from stock on something which is not really a 'performance' upgrade (i.e., the current steering on our cars is just fine!)? At some point desire for preservation in 'original' form should outweigh 'convenient' mods.

And besides, rebuilt steering racks are readily available at reasonable $$ (don't bother with a used one from some yard -- be sure what you are getting is 'right.')
