Sounds like a the power steering pump to me -- maybe the pump is going or belt is slipping. Definitely check it for leaks. I think if it were your rack, you would notice the car darting/changing direction or maybe having some slop on center. They rarely wear out. I am told there is also a steering column U-joint on the airbag-equipped cars like my '90 that can make noise (clunking) and wear, but I have not heard of it being a problem with the earlier cars.

at full lock to the right, it screeeeeeetches, and under slow rolling turns it groans badly. I just replaced the tie-rods less than a week ago, unfortunetly becuase of school, I have not had it properly aligned. could i have messed up my steering rack when putting the tie rods in?

also, I've heard that a e36 M3 steering rack will fit, is this better? cheaper?

is replacing a steering rack a do-it-yourself, or leave it to the pro's job?
