If you are serious about a track only car, the E30 M3 has to be the only way to go.
I have no trouble toasting Alpina 2.7's on the track with my meagre 200bhp. I have a friend who has a 2.7 with about 260bhp which is fast in a straight line but he is the first to admit that it doesn't come close to an M3 in the bendy bits.
Get yourself an M3, strip it, cage it, fit coilovers all round, nice wheels with r compound tyres, cam and chip for about 220bhp and enjoy thrashing all comers !!!!!

Roops.

I am tired of beating on my e36 m3 on the track. I would like to get a car just for track events solo and some nasa, bmw cca races. I don't know which way to go, shoud I buy a 325 and do the motor and build a race car or should I go with an e 30 m3, I do have a budget. E30's are more expensive for parts and other things but is it worth it ?. How does that high reving 4 cylinder compare to a built up 325 with 2.7 diesel crank ?. Which car will I have more fun on the track with? I want something reliable. I need advice any will be much appreciated.
