I'll take a crack at this one. To me 18k sounds like a pretty good amount to spend. With that you can be pretty sure you will be getting an excellent condition car. In a previous thread Kevin posted his car for sale for around 19k I believe and it sounded like one of the best on the market. You could buy one for 12- average it seems- and put money into it or you could buy a high spec low mileage car and go from there. It would be less of a pain to buy the one costing more as a cheaper one will invariably cost more in the long run. My advice- buy the best you can afford and work from there.

I'm selling my e36 and want to get an e30. I want the most reliable car I can get for $18k. Should I look for a low mileage car for about that price or find a physically sound car for a good deal and use the money I save to have it sent to korman or some place like that for an engine rebuild and any other work that need to be done. Also for this kind of project is $18k enough or am I getting in over my head. I will end up spending more over time but want to keep it under 18k to start.
Thanks, Sam
