Why on earth is the battery so big!? (archive)

I've just had occasion to remove my battery for the first time to recharge it as I haven't used the car for a while.
I was amazed at how big and heavy the thing is! Far bigger than the one in my M535i. Just wondering why the battery needs to be so big? Afterall the S14 is a much smaller engine than the big six in my M535i.....surely a smaller battery would have been a significant weight saving....this thing takes two hands to carry...lol
