Kevin,

This is a time consuming job as you figured out already. But there are several issues that should be addressed besides the gasket itself.

Perform a leakdown test to ensure head is good

Head should be checked for true level( no warps, machine if needed)

Condition of the valves & seats ( full cut or lapping only needed)

Valve seals ( replace them any ways)

How many miles on valve springs? ( replace them w/ BMW Motorsport )

Replace the tensioner plug assembly or at the very least you should check the spring to make sure it is within specs! ( I have one you can buy if you need it)

NEw HEad bolts obviously too!

Exhaust studs and gaskets? ( replace now while head is out )there are a few o rings that should be replaced and you had better be sure the oil port o ring is in when you assemble or you will be heading right back down there to replace it after all your hard work!

You are about to embark on a big project and you may want to get the Koala Motorsports repair manual on CD which covers a ton of great stuff for this job!

Be prepared before you do this job so that you will be confident that your engine will work flawlessly when you finish!

BEst of Luck!!!!! Eric
