Same thing has happened to me twice. A year ago, it was because the wires to the cooling fan were damaged and they were repaired accordingly. At the same time, the fan switch and thermostat were replaced whilst getting to the root of the problem. Things were fine for a year, and then it over-heated again. The fan was seized and needed replacing, and things are fine again. You need to listen to see if the fan is coming on when the temp gauge rises to beyond its half way mark. If it isn't, chances are that one of the above problems will be responsible. Also, check your fuses. I think around 4 fuses are involved in the fan's circuit, so it might be that, which be easiest and cheapest of all to fix. Like you, I had to keep the car moving at 40mph to cool the engine and turn the engine off in stopped traffic, or risk an insane bill for a new motorsport 4 pot.

My car stays nice and cool, while I am driving.
When I stop for a couple of minutes, my coolant sensor gauge starts rising. It will keep climbing unless I turn on the heater, which then it will not go any further. If I start driving, it will cool back down.
What could this be? I have a new radiator, I am thinking it is the water pump or the thermostat. I have a slightly loose expansion tank cap, but I don't think that it is the problem.
Also, I still haven't solved my dead oil temp gauge. I don't know where I should look for a grounding wire. Any help on this would also be appriciated.
Thanks for the help.
