I'm sure the spark needs changed a bit, but not enough to preclude good results.

And time consuming. It's hard to get every last final fraction of a pony out of every cylinder every time safely in all weather and load conditions. And driveability is even touger. Mass produced cars typically have thousands of man hours of programming efforts put into their mapping. Dyno and street and track driving time is needed.
