In Reply to: rear main oil seal - how replace? posted by Robert on November 18, 2001 at 19:38:33:

I just had to drop my tranny this weekend to replace a failed pressure plate:

With the car on the ground:

remove the airbox (save thoes 4 "O" rings)
remove the breather from the valve cover to the valve on the lower block
unbolt the steel return line from the rear of the head where it bolts to the block (10 mm socket) this will allow easre access to the upper starter bolt
remove the 2 starter bolts and the 2 upper bellhousing bolts.

Put the car on a lift (forget doing this on your back with the car on jack stands, it IS possable to do it this way, but a solid PITA:

remove the exaust from the down pipe back, set off to the side
remove the heat shielding, aet off to the side
undo the three guebo bolts to reliese the drive shaft
unbolt the center carrier and seperate the driveshaft from the tranny
unbolt the shifter fron the tranny and undo the rear little clip from the bar that goes between the tranny and the shift lever
remove the 3 sensors on the driver's side of the bellhousing (cover & two lower sensors...10 mm, upper sensor...8 mm) and the reverse light wires
remove the slave cylinder from the bellhousing
unbolt the hanger bracket on the passenger side (leave the portion that is under the nuts on the bellhousing)
undo and remove the tranny mounts and crossmember
jack up the engine in front of the main crossmember 9on the oilpan ~1/2" or so. it is easer to remove the tranny if the whole kit and kaboodle is sloped down at the rear.)
support the tranny a little,
remove the "torx" bolts from the oilpan cover
remove the remaining bolts, 17mm and 13 mm, from the tranny
remove the tranny from the car (with a big friend's help)
remove the flywheel
the rear seal is in a holder and can be replaces in place.

these things should be done 'cause it is a big job to get at it later

have the flywheel dressed (0.008" step on the flywheel)
put in a new pilot bearing
replace the clutch disk (you will need a tool to line up the disk)
replace the thrught out bearing
replace worn parts in the shift linkage
assemble is basically the reverse (have spare exaust flange seals ~$15 each, 2 needed, and use red locktite in the flywheel bolts)
