When i started prepering for my cage in my M3 -88 i noticed rust on the floor and especially around the throttle pedal.

itīs a common problem on older cars.
But people hardly notice it since they dont check under the carpet that often.

It would be worth at some point checking under your carpet in your cars for rust. I have noticed surface rust around the throttle pedal on the floor. I think this is caused by the edge of the carpet around the base of the throttle allowing water to run down the pedal and onto the floor. During the winter when the counsil are out spreading salt this area is more vunerable (salty water on your shoes).
