Thankfully we don't have such rigorous tests in the UK. From what I have heard though one tip for you guys is to get your car absolutely red hot before you take the car in. This means the cat is working at it's most efficient thereby reucing your emissions.

I brought my car in for a smog test yesterday and it failed for hydrocarbon emissions. I took it to a referee station figuring that they could resolve the lack of a check engine light issue. I am still having trouble convincing them that the car does not have a check engine light. They checked the ALLDATA database and said it was inconclusive. Also the build date is 5/90 but it has a 1991 emissions sticker under the hood. They said they have never seen that on a BMW. Here are the numbers for the hydrocarbon test. CO and NO were higher than the average but still below the allowed maximum.

15 mph 118 30 148
25 mph 93 12 70

Before the test I ran a bottle of Techron through, changed the oil, and changed the plugs. The O2 sensor was replaced three years ago and the valves were adjusted recently. The plug wires were replaced two years ago and the coil a year ago. I replaced the intake gaskets and all vacuum hoses a year ago too. I noticed the cap and rotor contacts looked a little crusty but they are only three years old (30,000 miles). I will replace these before the re-test. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
