Having driven both the e30 M3 and the 2.3-16 in both auto and manual versions, I couldn't agree more. The auto in the 190 16V really does kill performance since the motor needs to be revved to get maximum performance from it. If you have to have an auto tranny you're better off with a 190 2.6 Sportline, but they're even more rare than the 16V. It took me a long time to find mine.

Choosing between the 190 2.3-16 and the e30 M3 is difficult since they are so similar and yet different. The biggest functional difference is the fact that the 190 is a 4 door. Given my choice I'd take the 190 for the street and the M3 for the track. I needed and auto in my street car so I got the 2.6, otherwise I'd have a 2.3-16.

Having owned and worked on both marques for years I can say that Mercedes are built better than BMWs but BMWs offer a more dynamic driving experience in many cases. Viva la difference!

Ya pays your money and ya takes your choices. The world is better off for having both marques in it.
