Question for the stereo gurus (archive)

I have an '88 with the non-infrared HU. The system is completely stock right now. I only want to replace the HU with an aftermarket one and still use the existing speakers. The stereo shop I went to said it could not be done because of the factory amp and the fact that the front speakers run at different ohms than the rears, something the factory amp handles. They said if I bypass the amp and try to run the fronts off the HU's amp that I may damage the new HU. I did not have this issue when I replaced the radio in my 320 nor have I had this issue with other cars, but no factory amp was involved either. Does this make sense or am I being fed a load of crap? Is there a way to use the existing speakers with a new HU without damaging anything? I am installing a Nakamichi CD-45z if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the assistance.
