An E36 M3, E46 M3, E34 M5, or E39 M5 weighs a lot, too. So what? They're still blisteringly fast. And AWD would help any of these cars put down their massive power when exiting turns.

Why do you think the Audi Quattros incurred a heavier weight penalty in every form of European touring car competition? Because properly done AWD (like E30 325iX and Audi Quattro) is faster, plain and simple.
