Phil Marx, BMW CCA prez has a BMW shop in Charlottesville, VA. He said they got an E30 325i 5-speed in the shop. He ordered parts using the last 7 digits of the VIN, and he kept getting parts for an automatic. The car was clearly not converted from auto to manual, so a trip to the dealer found a "secret" VIN stamped in the car. The dealer tech did not reveal the location of this "secret VIN tag", he only said he found it using a mirror. Turns out it was different than the rest of the car. They ran the VIN and found it was stolen several years ago.

The thieves actually found the title to another 325i 5-speed and removed all of its VIN tags and transferred them to the stolen car. Then they even soldered over the stamped VIN on the firewall and stamped in the new VIN!! Amazing!! This was on the UUC Digest about a year or so ago.

Here's the point of my story:

Get the VIN off the B-pillar sticker or the firewall and let us know. The BMW parts CD will tell you what year it is by the last 7 digits. The car you have pictured is either an 88 with all the 1990 goodies (like airbag, seats, windows, etc) installed, or it's a 1990 with false VIN tags. Why would anyone spend $4000 to install an airbag wheel, steering column, sensors, etc??
