In addition to all the M3 specific handling pieces, there are several benefits to the macphearson struts and semi trailing rear arms. Although this is best detailed in Gustave's site, the results are very low roll centers and very small roll couple lengths, You metion that the center of gravity is not particularly low. That's somewhat true, but, its the roll center and roll couple that determine weight transfer and its the ability of a car to resist weiht transfer that makes it handle well. The E30's all have good inherent handling because of these things and its improved a lot by the M3's changes in bushings, caster, and control arm geometry.
