For about $6000 you can have an E36 M3 engine, tranny, driveshaft, wiring, brain, etc and drop it right in. It requires minimal mods (E34 525i oil pan). That's 210-220 RWHP bone stock (no software upgrade). Then, if you choose, send the engine to CSS Motorsports (Chuck Stickley) and have him put in cams, pistons, program custom software, and you can have 280-310 HP naturally aspirated (depending on gas). Bimmerworld gets their M50 engines worked by Stickley (100% SCCA ITS legal) and they are cranking out the power. Chuck's own B-Mod E36 M3 club racer puts out over 325HP and has lasted 2 seasons without a rebuild. The "balance" will be thrown off, but not that badly. You retain a BMW engine that can whip ass and still give 100% civility for street use.
That's just my 2 bits...
For $12,000 initial investment, Ron Checca can build a 310HP club racing S14. James Clay of bimmerworld had one. Ask him about it. It wasn't the most reliable thing on the planet, as it ran a tad lean and melted a lot of stuff in a race at Road Atlanta. Subsequent rebuilds (barring mechanical damage) only cost a couple thousand. You spend the money up front on software, rods, crank, pistons, headwork, valves, cams, throttles, headers, etc, etc.
