Heated locks? (archive)

A recent period of freezing weather here has seen me unable to get into the driver's side of my car on a number of mornings (fortunately the passenger side has remained unfrozen). I was just wondering.....I thought these cars were supposed to have heated door locks? Now what strikes me as a little odd is that how is the door lock heater going to work if the car isn't switched on and how can you turn the car on if you can't get into it in the first place?!
