for the S38/M88. Same bore centers, very similar blocks (except for 4 vs 6 cyl). That's why. The first E30 M3 engine used off the shelf parts and readily available tooling to make a 16 valve 4 cylinder.

That's why they didn't use the 6-cyl M20. That and it was never a race engine to being with!
