Surprisingly the S38 is lighter than the S50! I'll have to research this as well. Maybe the numbers are switched around. I will double check tonight. I would think the S38 weighed more.

S38 149,0 M5 E28 - 328.55lbs
S50 155,4 M3 E36 - 342.66lbs

But the S38 is a much bigger engine. You can punch it out to 4.0L with an M88 crank. It is longer, has wider bore centers, and is basically a BIG six. That can't be right! The 2-piece S38 head has to weigh a lot more than the M50/S50 head (same casting in US models), too. And the M50/S50 got plastic intakes, while the S38 has a large aluminum thing hanging off it with 6 throttles.

I'm dumbfounded. Maybe they weighed all the accessories with the engine? Maybe the massive M50/S50 flywheel is the deciding factor?
