after I purchased it:

- Inspection 2, incl. valve adjust, replace all fluids (diff/gearbox also, as well as new plugs, ignition wires, cap/rotor
- cooling system rebuild, incl. hoses, waterpump and radiator
- replace AFM boot
- upper alternator bushing
- new belts

My guibo and intake blocks/gaskets are fine for now, but I am having my mechanic keep an eye on those, too.

Also, it would not be a bad idea to replace all of the fuses (carry extras) as they are bound to have gone bad in a 10 year old car. And as you might imagine, I am anal and want to have total confidence in my car....YMMV

I'd suggest price shopping BIG TIME on parts -- try Maxmillian's, Zygmunt Motors, Turner and Bimmerworld, among others. There is a wide variance on parts and ALL of these vendors will be better than dealer prices. However if you havent already joined BMWCCA, you should, if only for the parts discount -- which pays for itself when you need small dealer stuff that you can't wait for shipping on, e.g. fasteners, gaskets, bulbs, etc. Get to know your parts guy and buy an ETK (electronic parts catalog) to cross-check part numbers. I have also found the exploded diagrams on the ETK to be very useful in terms of understanding how stuff goes together.

Good luck, I hope you enjoy the car!

check all belts and hoses 9it IS a 12 year old car after all)
Suspension bushings are getting old
Guebo (sp?) guebio...whatever the spelling
intake blocks (gaskets) and rubber support
relpace all fluids
Cap and rotor and plugs, possably ignition wires
