This a long shot, I have a very similar
problem on one of my car. it turn out that the
problem is on my cat. converter. the result
of running the car with a bad O2 sensor it made the car run rich and plug the converter in the proccess.

Doesn't sound like a long shot to me. Sounds very reasonable. I had the same issue in a VW in the past.
