This a long shot, I have a very similar
problem on one of my car. it turn out that the
problem is on my cat. converter. the result
of running the car with a bad O2 sensor it made the car run rich and plug the converter in the proccess.

Doesn't sound like a long shot to me. Sounds very reasonable. I had the same issue in a VW in the past.

I just had the same problem with my 2000 VW GOLF, replaced both oxygen sensor and the car is running perfect. Do not forget, if you run your car rich for a long time it will clogg the cat. converter and it will create back pressure to the engine.

hope this help, Mike no e30 m3
