If you want to know if alternator is bad, just measure the voltage at the battery (any Radio-Shack $10 multimetr will do) with the engine running. The alternator should charge at around 14 volts. If you get 12 volts, it is dead. Remove the regulator from the alternator and check the brushes, as often the regulator is the culprit for a non-charging alternator.
