Copied text from a post I made to the local BMW board here in Seattle several months ago....OK, so Jen and I are driving home from Bremerton tonight after the Drivers School. I am driving. Fairly slow traffic. We get all the way to the Sprague St. exit after the bridge and a cop comes up on me flashing his headlights. So, knowing that I AM NOT speeding, I pull over. Well, HE FOLLOWS ME OVER and turns on the roof lights! I am thinking WTF!?
Well, he walks up, young guy, and says, "Looks to me like you have an aftermarket exhaust on this nice car of yours." I said, "Well, I don't know that, officer. I bought the car in June and this is what came on it." (OK, not really, but I was in CMA mode...) His response was that he felt that the exhaust note was "too loud" and that I was in violation of RCW 46.37.390.3 (RCW Link). It states, "No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the engine of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and it shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle not equipped as required by this subsection, or which has been amplified as prohibited by this subsection."
I just gave him this dumb look and said I had no idea. Well, he takes my DL and Insurance card, heads to his car, and comes back with a print out of the RCW section! He says that I should take the car into a BMW dealer and have them install a new factory exhaust system as soon as possible. Bah! OK, so he's doing his job, but I can just see this guy as having the responsibility of chasing down all the rice burner's wit those coffee can mufflers all day. A nice M3 was a change of pace.
Jeez, just think. If I had been driving the M6 I'd be in jail be now.....
