I'm pushing +190K on my original chain. Several months ago the chain was getting a little noisy at startup. If I parked level and out of gear there was no noise. If I parked uphill and in gear I could always hear a little chain slap at startup. I replaced my tensioner only, about 4 months ago. Now I never hear any chain slap, no matter how I park. My friends dad is a Toyota mechanic and says he has heard Toyotas, Datsuns, and Nissans come into his shop that had chain slap as long as the car was running, not just at startup. Pretty scary. From what I have been told if you let the chain slap go on and don't get it fixed it can wear out the chain rails.
