I would argue that running the oil really hot on a regular basis (autoX, etc) would make a case for using synthetics, as syn is supposed to better retain its viscosity under severe conditions. Of course, once it's overheated, it makes no difference what's in there. Also, imho, unless you're pushing the engine to the limit on a regular basis, there's no reason to change it out as often as 3k miles.
