Agreed. That's why I run Mobil 1 Motorsport (15w50) which seems to be fine and is pretty close to the original oil spec. I have also run Castrol synth. in mine and Agip Synth. None was or better or worse than each other as far as noise on startup was concerned. My driveway has a slight incline so the oil allways drains out of the tensioner which means it is noisy at startup. This probably has a greater bearing than the oil type.

where did u read about it not liking any synth. oil of any description?

From what I know, synthetic + M3 = fine. 15w50 Mobil one is what I hear others recommend, but within reason anything is fine. I`m currently running with water, well near enough anyway and all seems well.

In 1987 BMW recommended mineral 10w40 in europe. But bare in mind the stuff we have around today wasnt around back then, so who knows what is ultimately the best for an S14.
