I run the late E36 M tensioner and have no noise at start up. Then again with the stock tensioner it was also quiet.

Bear in mind that at the time the M3 came out, synth oil was not used by many and was considered very exotic.

I run 5w30 or 10W30 synth and the S14 runs great.. a hair more output too. Much better lubing at cold start-up and probably more tolerant of revving when not up to full oil temp.
