What is the optimal size 17, also max width etc.?? (archive)

Just bought an E30 M3 and need to upgrade to some 17s.

It looks like 215/40/17 is the closest diameter to stock, but what are people safely running? Stock suspension for now, but I may lower it a little bit.

What is the ideal offset?

Can you run staggered tires and is it advisable?

I'm thinking of picking up some used E36 M3 wheels/tires and want to see what fits well. Do they need spacers? I'm sure the replicas are worthless, right?
