Has anyone had success with 8x17" front wheel/9x17" rear wheel package? If so, what tire sizes worked the best, and did it require any modifications to sheet metal? I have heard of 8" in the rear, but not 9". Input please...

Vance, remember it takes some serious hp to turn those 9" rims, they are going to be heavier and more expensive and the same for the tires. Unless you got traction problems or more than 250 hp I would stay with 8" rims with a 225 or 235, if you want to stagger them you could try running a 8" rear with a 245 on it.
