squish, or the interaction between the piston flats and the head, has a benefit to combustion quality and burn speed. The increased burn quality, and reduction of trapped end gases reduces the risk of detonation. So much so, i have seen it refered to as artificial octane.

If anything you want the squish area as tight as possible, custom pistons are in order to get the compression where you want it. Thick head gaskets should be left in the past.
