well you should check out to see if it is happening in all gears.

Do you have a close ratio gearbox in that car?

Does the pinging last longer in 3rd and 4th gears or is it just a spike when the revs hit 6,000?

It could be a bad Throttle position sensor. There are 3 WOT maps for the engine that you may not be accessing due to a faulty TPS.

Troubleshoot the TPs operation first.
