Sorry Allan, but you will have a hard time getting help with a Cabrio here because original, that is with an electric top, are extremely rare. Most Cabrio's here are made from 325's and have manual tops.
I do know that there are two motors on the electric top. One for the top and one for the boot lid. The top motor will burn out of put under too much strain, like cold weather folding.
Another thing to look for is the bar that attaches the top control cables to the rotating gear, (ball joint) can either break or pop off if put under strain as well. Just a thought that maybe the motor is working but just isn't attached to the top. You can see this if you manually open the lid and it is in the middle of top well against the back. Ill send you a pic of this mechanism via email.
