Not unless your gearbox is toast. It would be pretty hard to hit reverse from 1st. The more common error is to get 2nd rather than 4th, when shifting from 3rd. This normally results in a bent valve or two, especially when you are up in the "intersting numbers...."

..That is the shift pattern for the Euro close ratio transmissions. It`s a road race setup, where you don`t use 1st gear much...it`s easy to hit reverse by mistake when shifting from first to second.
