Had mine done at 76K. I changed the tensioner at 75K and it made no difference. Rattled on startup for up to 5 minutes regardless of hot or cold.
All components were replaced 1000 for the job. well worth it the car is a lot smoother.
Some people fit the later chain tensioner from the E36 to cure the noise however i believe that if its worn replace the full thing putting more tension on a weak/worn chain in my mind is not good.
Also synthetic oil can cause more chain noise, i run on mineral 15/40 oil changed every 3 months or 3000 miles. This was advice given to me buy a main dealer and a independant m3 expert.

At what mileage have owners changed their timing chains and related guides? Has anyone had one break, and if so, was there any warning?
thank you.
