The S-14 is a great engine and the E30 series cars in general (M3 included) have had great reliability in my experience. I think your local shop is crazy. Certainly my experience with my 2 E30 M3s has been far better (reliability-wise) than the same time period with my E34 M5 (ugh!).

P.S. -- If you opt not to buy that car, I'd love to have the contact info: $14k for a well kept 80xxx mile car is a very reasonable price.
