The car you are talking about is too close to being 'just right' (including price) to bother with out-of-state purchases. (Actually, I think the guy is right on the correct asking price; it's just too bad he isn't a little more eager to sell, but that's life).

As noted, out-of-state brings a whole bundle of problems -- the biggest being that you have to depend on an inspector (mechanic) that you've probably never talked to before in your life (and never will again). The chance of ending up with a 'pig-in-a-poke' is great (It happened to me on an E34 M5).

Now, if you were looking for an 'exceptional example' then you might have to roam a little. But good, $14k E30 M3s are available in most major cities. I'd jump on it if I were you.
