Adding Oil to strut Housing (archive)

I understand the basic principles of thermal dynamics, and
that the addition of oil will help in the dissipation of heat. My question is, why in the Bentley manual is it stressed so highly in caution, NOT to add oil to the strut housing when using a gas
shock/strut???
