That rust that you mentioned worries me.

First thing I would do is acess the rust situation. Theres a drain on the engine-passenger side of the firewall that frequently clogs. Take it off, and while cleaning it out check for rust around the area. Do a througugh job!

I've seen "wet" owners manuals get that way because of leaks in the firewall seeping into the glovebox.

Do the carpets get wet when it rains or you do a good wash?
