Engine runs cold (archive)

Being pretty new to the E30, I was trying to find out if what I am experiencing is normal. My engine never makes it over the tick past 120F (so maybe 170ish) and my water temp gauge seems to never get to normal operating temps, but kind of stays in between cold and normal. I at first attributed this to the fact that I am running a 20w50 oil and the outside temp is in the 40s. Having no bypass to the oil cooler might be preventing the oil from getting hot. But now I am beginning to wonder if the thermostat is stuck open, since the car still failed to get warm after idling in between every autocross run. Anyone have ideas?
