I've got a weird problem that's cropped up recently in my '88 M3.
Basically when going to start the car, you turn the ignition key to start and nothing happens for a second or two or three. You can hear the fuel pump start up and after a longish wait the starter cranks fine.
Most of the time it starts without that hesitation just fine, but every now and again it has this long wait before the starter spins.
Once now it just plain refused to start at all and I had to push start the car (which started fine). I checked the relays and re seated them all - swapped out for a known good fuel-pump relay that I carry for the compatible relays. Nothing thus the push-start.
During that long trip, I'd periodically kill the engine (while still moving) and see if I could get it to crank with the key - nothing - so I would let the clutch out and start it again. About three hours later I needed to get gas so I tried it while nearing the gas station - key didn't work. Got gas with the car running and while backing up stalled it. Surprisingly it started right up with the key again. Has worked fine since.
Needless to say, I'm hesitant to drive it anywhere for fear I'm going to need to push-start it.
Any thoughts on what the problem could be?
