...backup lights. Rather than a bad switch, most of the time the problem is a broken wire. The wire to the switch threads through a hole in the rubber inner shift boot. It gets wiggled every time the shifter is moved. When I replaced the inner boot, I found that the wire was broken (not the insulation, just the conductor).

Hi all,

My backup lights do not turn on when I'm on reverse. All my fuses are OK. The bulbs look OK, too. A friend mentioned that in his E36 M3 and on his VW, there is a switch on the transmission that you can flip and this fixes the problem. Does this apply to our cars, too? If so, where is it?
